Juliet Scott was married for five years. Three of them were good. She was young, Damien was too. They were in love and carefree; had fun and had a lot of sex, traveled to a lot of places. She'd been on track to start med school but when she met Damien, she wanted him instead, and she thought she'd always choose him over everything.

Until she got pregnant.

He stuck around for a few months but then, conveniently his job took him away and the stretches of time between being home and being gone were longer. He was never a bad dad to Mia, not once, but it was like a chore to be home, to be a husband and civilian again. Juliet missed him but she tried to talk to him about it and it was a fight, every time. He had a job, he had missions, he couldn't just give that up. So she decided a year and a half ago to not make him choose anymore. She sent him divorce papers, certified mail, with a letter explaining to him that she was tired of feeling like she and Mia weren't a priority. Like he didn't want to be there when he was back in the states. She wasn't surprised when she got the signed paperwork back with no note in response.

She and Mia have been solo ever since, the two of them moving to Miami to be closer to Juliet's sister. Med school finally happens, and now Juliet's an intern and Mia is five. It's been hard, harder than Juliet ever thought she'd have to do on her own, but she's doing it. She's never told Damien he can't be a part of Mia's life, she's never tried to keep him away from her. When she moves, she makes sure someone in his branch of the military, wherever he is, gets her address. She's not even angry at him anymore, just sad that it ended this way between them.

Mia is just excited, and Damien keeps thinking and fearing in the back of his mind that he might not come back. And he wants his little girl to remember this, not...what might happen. So when they get there, he does everything with her, playing every game she wants to play, whatever she wants.

Juliet takes so much video and takes so many pictures, and she realizes she's so damn glad for Disney too, that they did that when they did. Mia does almost everything in the place, she gets so many prizes and they all eat pizza. She winds up falling asleep in her car seat on the way home, and as Damien drives, Juliet's just looking out of the window, silent tears falling down her cheeks, hoping he can't tell in the dark.

"I wanted to...I wanted her to have this," he says quietly, reaching out in the dark to hold Juliet's hand as he drives.

[dharmalady]

"So did I," Juliet says in reply, sniffling just a little as she clings to his hand. "I needed it, too."

He knows she's crying and he doesn't blame her for feeling like the sky's fallen down on them right now. "Juliet. I'm not done with this life. My girls. I'm coming back, I fucking promise."

[dharmalady]

"You have to. I need you. Mia needs you. Just...be focused. Please. I know you have to go do dangerous things but I can't lose you. Ever," Juliet whispers.

[inthewar]

"I won't let anything keep me from coming back to you, baby," he swears to her, clinging to her hand tightly.

[dharmalady]

Once they're home, Juliet lets Damien do everything to get Mia tucked into bed, letting him take his time, do what he needs to. She waits in their bedroom after kissing the top of Mia's head and works on getting every video and picture she can sent to Damien's phone so that he can look at all of it any time he wants.

He cuddles his daughter for a little while before kissing her over and over again, watching her sleep and breathe for a moment, memorizing this before going to Juliet. He curls up in bed with her, tugging her into his arms, kissing her fiercely.

Juliet holds his face in her hands as they kiss, and she's putting as much into it as she can, all her love for him, everything she's felt. She doesn't want him to doubt for a single second that she loves him, that she doesn't blame him for this. "Please, Damien," she whispers. she needs him, and it all feels so urgent because what if this is the last time? What if she loses him? She couldn't even move on when they were simply divorced; if he dies she'll be completely alone forever. Without Damien, the only connection she has is Mia.

He doesn't hesitate, but rather than straddling her, he just lays there wrapped up with her, facing her and tangling their legs together as he kisses her, thrusting into her and joining their bodies. He groans softly, clinging to her and pressing his forehead to hers.

Juliet is trying to savor this moment, to soak it in and feel every single way he's touching her and moving in her. She wants to beg him not to go, more than anything, but she can't, and her eyes close tightly as they move together, her heart breaking even at the same time pleasure is building.

He presses his face up against hers, nuzzling and breathing her in as they move together, his arms completely around her to cradle her close to him.

She doesn't want this to end, she doesn't to sleep, she doesn't want anything involving him to stop. But eventually, the pleasure builds until she's whimpering his name and then she just falls apart, jerking against him, clinging to him and crying, all at the same time.

He knows this hurts, it hurts for so many reasons, and he breathes heavily as they keep moving together, just showing each other love in the purest way possible. But when she climaxes, he's over the edge with her, breathing out her name with so much pleasure.

"I love you...baby, I love you..."

[dharmalady]

"I love you, Damien," she whispers, sniffling and nuzzling in against him, pressing kisses everywhere she can. She needs to stay tucked right into his arms, not willing to move at all.

He kisses her tenderly, needing to kiss her everywhere, nuzzling and holding her. He just keeps whispering that he loves her, never wanting to let her go.

Eventually, she must fall asleep because the next thing she knows, sunlight is filtering into the room. She's still in Damien's arms, though, and she lets herself think it was a dream, that he's not going. Her lips press to his chest over his heart, thinking he's still asleep. "Please don't leave me," she whispers, wanting it to be true more than anything, that he's not, he's figured out a way to stay somehow and still help.

Damien's sleeping peacefully for the moment, and it doesn't look like he's heard her, though maybe just from recognizing the sound of her voice, his head turns a little towards her and he mumbles her name in his sleep.

Juliet whispers softly against his ear that she's right here, and she thinks that for however long, when he murmurs her name like that, she won't be there. They'll both be alone, no one to take care of them. She doesn't mean to start the day crying, but it's real now, he's leaving in just a few hours.

He rouses just a few moments later, and when he blinks his eyes open and sees her crying, he frowns in concern, reaching out to stroke her cheek. "God, I'm fucking sorry, baby..."

[dharmalady]

"I know. I know you are," she whispers, trying to pull it together. I'm sorry, I'm trying to be strong for you because I know it's hard. I know it is. I'm making it worse."

[inthewar]

"You're not," he assures her, kissing her forehead. "It's killing me, too, baby."

[dharmalady]

"We still have to tell Mia," Juliet says mournfully, closing her eyes again.

[inthewar]

"I know," he closes his eyes tightly for a moment and then looks over at the clock. He has to get up now, he can't put it off anymore. He takes a quick shower, getting dressed, and then he goes to wake his little girl, hating this so much.
